I am now creating silk art, in the form or scarves and scenes, on a full time basis and feel so lucky to be able to do what I love and make it my home business, known as Silkwalker Originals.
Silk is a wonderful medium to work with, allowing dyes to flow gently over the surface, creating interesting designs and colour combinations. It has a soft sensuous hand, gentle drape and a beautiful sheen that radiates a true luminosity when painted. I consider my hand-painted silk scarves as pieces of wearable art and, once heat set, they are colourfast and hand washable.
I feel fortunate to live in Prince Edward Island. From childhood I was able to observe, enjoy and travel throughout ‘Canada’s most beautiful province’. I use the striking images of its rolling hills and farmland, fishing villages and sandy beaches, as inspiration for my designs and colour combinations. My husband provides me with many of the photo images used in my paintings. I had the privilege to study under internationally recognized silk artist, Daniel Jean-Baptiste, who resides and works out of Saint Lucia in the Caribbean and Markham,
Ontario. You will see his influence in my silk works, where his “Shimmering Light Water Technique” combines with my own painting style to create the illusion of light and movement.
Heather’s work is available at the Charlottetown Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays and via Etsy.
