18 May Camping in Central Coastal PEI

The days are getting warmer, the grass is getting greener and the trees are starting to bud some leaves. You know what that means…camping season is almost here! PEI has no shortage of fantastic and beautiful campgrounds. Whether you want to “rough it” or you’re more of a glamper, there is truly something for everyone from tip to tip across the Island. 

Although for the most part camping is a fairly stress free and relaxing experience, there is still lots of preparation involved. It takes planning, coordination and a little bit of work to arrange for the perfect camping vacation. Here are some tips to help make your next camping trip a little bit easier! 

1. Pick your date

This one may seem like a no-brainer, but there is a lot more that goes into this than one may think. Choosing a date is very important when it comes to camping. First you have to pick a time that works with your schedule, but also want to be sure your campground of choice has availability. This summer is sure to be a busy one on PEI, so definitely visit the campground’s website or give them a call to see if you can make a booking. Also be sure to check out any special events the campground may be hosting throughout the summer as well as other festivals and events on PEI! These activities may be a factor in choosing your dates to come visit. 

2. Choose your campground

There are lots of great camping options on PEI. Make sure to do some research and choose what best suits your needs. Perhaps you want to tent and go off the grid, or maybe you have an RV and want a site with all the bells and whistles. Every campground on PEI is different and has its own unique features, sites and amenities. It is also a good idea to take a look at the location of the campground and what is nearby. If you want to do more things in the Charlottetown area, you probably do not want to book a site in Tignish! Finally, take a look at the prices at the different campgrounds so you can be sure to budget your trip accordingly. 

3. Take a look at the campground map

So you’ve chosen your dates and campground, now what? Most campgrounds have their map available on the website, or can send a digital copy to you. The map will give you the lay of the land and help pick the best site for you. Maybe you want to be close to the bathrooms, or you’d prefer a beach side site. The map will show you all the sites, important buildings and other important details about the campground that you will want to know. This will also help you out prior to arrival so you will know where to find everything you need.

4. Do your research on the campground

Before heading out on your camping trip, find out what types of amenities the campground has to offer. It will be helpful to know if they have firewood available for purchase, if they have laundry services, if they have dining establishments and more. You will want to know if you need some extra cash on hand for additional fees that might arise as well. It is also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the campground’s rules and regulations so you can get to the camping fun right away.

5. See what activities are happening

It’s very common for campgrounds to have a set schedule of activities, as well as special events. Knowing these in advance will help you plan your other activities accordingly. To ensure you have lots of fun and make the most of your trip, it’s great to have a game plan ahead of time. 

6. Pack for different types of weather…

If anything can be said about PEI weather, it’s that it is unpredictable – even in the summer. One day it could be 30 degrees and the next it could be 15 degrees. Or, it could be sunny one minute and raining the next. When camping, it is important to have clothes and other items packed for varying weather. It may be hot during the day but cold at night, so you would need warmer clothes for sleeping. Try to have a variety of things to wear so you are prepared.

7. …But also pack light

You definitely do not want to overpack when camping. Space is limited, no matter what type of camping unit you are using. You don’t want to run out of space or be uncomfortable in what are likely to be small quarters. Bring the things you need and find an efficient way to pack it up and keep it stored safely when traveling and at your site. 

8. Prepare for rain and wind

No matter where you go on PEI, you are bound to be faced with wind. Being on an Island, it’s inevitable. This can sometimes make camping tricky especially if in a tent. It’s important to be prepared for wind with extra stakes, blocks and other materials to keep your camping unit in place. The same goes for rain! Although the dream is to have a rain-free camping trip, it is something that can happen. Bring a tarp to protect you and your belongings! 

9. Discover what is in the area

PEI has endless fun things to do around every corner. Do some research through organizations such as local regional tourism information centers and Tourism PEI to discover what kind of businesses are near the campground you are staying at. You may want to find a delicious local restaurant, places to shop or things to do. 

10. Stock up on camping gear 

The last thing you want during your vacation is to be in the middle of your camping trip and realize you are lacking a necessary tool. Write out a list ahead of time and pick up and pack whatever you need before you leave. Some useful gear may include a good cooler (or two), basic tools, a flashlight, sleeping bags, and cooking utensils to name a few.

Camping is one of the most relaxing and fun things to do as a family or with friends. It’s fairly simple, gets you outside and is a great way to enjoy the summertime. PEI is home to many fantastic campgrounds sure to exceed your expectations and make your camping dreams a reality!
